The Law of Kindness

Recently, Mary Beeke wife of Dr. Joel Beeke, was interviewed by Ingrid Schlueter of Crosstalk America. Mary Beeke is the author of the book, The Law of Kindness: Serving With Heart and Hands. You can listen to her interview at Crosstalk America or by simply clicking here.
Mary was prompted to write this book because she loves the whole concept of kindness. She enjoyed receiving kindness as a child but over the years she’s learned that there’s a lot of joy and blessing in being kind. Kindness is the state, quality or habit of being kind. She sees two parts to this. First of all there’s the inside part which includes feelings of compassion and the motives of our hearts. The second part involves the resulting behavior which is intended for the improvement of another person’s situation.

Mary believes that righteousness and holiness go hand in hand with kindness. In other words, kindness is not soft or “wishy-washy.” Tough love is sometimes necessary. In other words, correction is also part of the category of kindness. She also pointed out in her interview towards the example of Jesus Christ, whose walk on earth was the greatest example of kindness. He showed kindness to those who were “down and out,” prostitutes, sick people, etc. His greatest kindness, of course, came in the form of his death on the Cross to save sinners.

So how does kindness manifest itself in our lives? Mary presents the example of the kind wife, the submission factor, how husbands can show kindness to their wives, kindness between parents and children, as well as kindness in the church. Hi, my name is Ardith Dewalt, Mike’s mom.Mike gave me your book at Christmas time, when he was home visting. I started reading it right away. I have to be honest, I thought, why would my son give this book to ME. I am kind, i show kindness? But it didn’t take long to see this book has a lot of truth written it. It just makes you stop and think. It’s help me in many ways. I’ve talked about it to everyone at work.

Hi, Ardith. This is Mary Beeke, responding to your comment. Kindness is something we all will be striving for life-long, Ardith. The more kindness we show, the more blessings we receive. And the more we know the Lord, the more we see His kindness, and love Him for it.

    Dear Mary,
Our Ladies Bible study group is planning to do a book study on your book: “The Law of Kindness” starting in a couple of weeks. Are there any suggestions you could give us that might make it helpful for me as I lead this study? I know that the questions at the back of the book will be very helpful to generate discussion, but perhaps you would have more “tips” to make this book study even more meaningfull? Thanks so much for writing the book, I am really looking forward to doing the study.
    God bless,

    Judy
