Dr. Beeke’s Top Commentaries on Ruth

#1 Exposition of Ruth and Esther, by George Lawson

Quality expositions of Ruth are very scarce. This one by George Lawson was highly esteemed by C. H. Spurgeon, who wrote: ”Intended for the general reader. The discourses are as spiritual and unaffected as their excellent author.” Dr. John Brown, in commending all of Lawson’s books, says that, ”he has rendered subjects, apparently barren, full of instruction” (Commenting and Commentaries)

#2 Esther & Ruth, by Ian Duguid

As R. Kent Hughes has observed, Iain M. Duguid brings together “a specialist’s knowledge of the Hebrew text and culture, a preacher’s eye for theme and structure, a pastor’s skill in nuanced application, a theologian’s grasp of Christ-centered theology, and a wordsmith’s attention to language and lingering metaphor.” This volume makes a valuable edition to P&R’s Reformed Expository Commentary series.

#3 Faithful God, by Sinclair Ferguson

The book of Ruth contains far more about God than its size would suggest; it records experiences of joy and sorrow; it tells a story of home life, romance and marriage, of unexpected conversion and radical consecration.
Here is a vital part of the biblical narrative of redemptive history, focusing like a microscope on part of the detailed preparation God made as he sovereignly directed history towards the coming of the Savior Jesus Christ. This book helps us to understand Christ himself¬-and, indeed the whole Bible-more fully and clearly, and teaches us much about God’s grace and providence.
The book has its origins in a series of memorable addresses given at the English Conference of the Evangelical Movement of Wales in Aberystwyth in August 1996. It includes as a helpful appendix a letter by John Newton on the guidance of God.
