Dr. Beeke’s Top Commentaries on the Gospels

#1 Expository Thoughts on the Gospel,  by J.C. Ryle’s

Rich in devotional applications that cut to the heart of a text, Ryle’s enduring expositions on the Gospels are endowed with his understanding of life and people. Ryle’s chief aim is to help the reader to know Christ. He also has another object in view. He writes so that his commentaries can be read aloud for family devotions. There are many other fuller commentaries on the Gospels, but no others make such compelling listening as those of J.C. Ryle.

#2 The Four Gospels, by David Brown

The Fourfold Gospel is the central portion of Divine Revelation. Into it, as a Reservoir, all the foregoing revelations pour their full tide, and out of it, as a Fountain, flow all the subsequent revelations. In other parts of Scripture we hear Christ by the hearing of the ear; but here our eye seeth Him. Elsewhere we see Him throught a glass darkly; but here, face to face.

#3 Discourses and Sayings or Our Lord, by John Brown

John Brown (1784-1858) was undoubtedly one of the finest biblical expositors of his own or any age. His Discourses and Sayings of our Lord brings together the extended teaching of Jesus and his various sayings in the course of one study.
