Bold preaching, saved souls, dramatic missionary journeys, the coming of the Holy Spirit—the Book of Acts is bursting with colorful, history-changing events! In this powerful series, one of the 20th century’s greatest preachers offers a captivating verse-by-verse exposition that will encourage, challenge, and strengthen you in your faith. Approx. 300 pages each, six hardcovers from Crossway.

Acts is first and foremost the history of the work of the Holy Spirit in the church. It brings together two great promises of “another Counsellor”, who would lead the disciples into all truth and the Great Commission to preach the gospel to the whole world in the assurance that he would be with them always, “to the very end of the age.” Acts is also the record of costly campaigning against a fiercely resistant enemy, over the eternal destiny of lost men and women. The sounds of battle echo from almost every scene. But so also does the scent of victory, as lives are changed and the light of Christ spreads from nation to nation!

Hughes’s critically acclaimed series is known for its clear exposition, readability, and practical application. This installment details the growth of early Christianity with the spreading flame of the Holy Spirit. A great resource for pastors, lay leaders, and any student of the Bible. 368 pages, hardcover from Crossway Books.

The Mesage of Acts by John R.W. Stott The Spirit moves the church into the world. That is how it has always been since the day of Pentecost when the Spirit brought thousands from many countries into the body of Christ. This book opens to us the early days of the church as recorded by Luke in the book of Acts. John Stott was rector of All Souls Church in London for twenty-five years and is an acclaimed and beloved author and commentator.

Alexander

The author was the third son of the famous Archibald Alexander, and an eminent Christian teacher in his own right. The Schaff-Herzog Encyclopaedia described him as the most remarkable linguist ever produced by America. Like his father, Alexander taught at Princeton Theological Seminary, occupying successively the chairs of Oriental and Biblical Literature, Church History, and New Testament Literature. His premature death was called by A.A. Hodge, ‘the most disastrous blow the institutions of Princeton ever experienced’.

Of this commentary on Acts C.H. Spurgeon wrote, ‘In all respects a work of the highest merit’. J.H. Thornwell held the same opinion: ‘Alexander’s commentaries on Acts and Mark I regarded as models, as nearly perfection in their kind as human skill could make them, and I have been in the habit, not only of recommending them, but of insisting on my classes procuring and studying them’.

Alexander’s merit as a writer lies in his clarity and precision of thought. His great purpose is to state the meaning of the text of Scripture and the continuing demand for his commentaries is one proof of the extent to which he succeeded.

This book began as a series of monthly Sabbath evening lectures during John Dick’s ministry in Glasgow. Over the course of 29 lectures, he touches upon the primary events in the history of the church, from the ascension of Christ to the Apostle Paul’s time in Malta and Rome. Each lecture is filled with theological and practical insights from the text.

#8 Let’s Study Acts, by Dennis Johnson

The Acts of the Apostles is unique among the books of the New Testament. Of the four men who wrote an account of the ministry, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, only one, Luke, continued the story into the decades which followed. Without his book, we would be unable to explain how the still-frightened band of disciples, seen behind closed doors at the close of the Gospels, became the boldly expanding movement seen in the rest of the New Testament.

Let’s Study Acts will lead you with clarity and insight through the amazing process by which Jesus’ words were fulfilled: ‘You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth’ (Acts 1:8). Softcover, 371 pages.
