Interview with Calvin Beeke on Taking Summer Greek I & II

1. How old are you? Could you tell me a little bit about yourself, your age, grade, and what you like to do for fun?
I am 17 years old, and I love selling things on ebay (stores.ebay.com/archeryheadquarters). I am president of my school, I help in leading a Bible study, and am VP of our youth group. My primary hobbies are hunting, archery, and fishing.

2. Who are your parents and what do they do for a living?
My father is Dr. Beeke – President of Puritan Reformed Seminary, and a prolific author, professor, conference speaker, and pastor. My mother is Mary Beeke – author and teacher.

3. What possessed you to take Greek at the age you are? Then, to take it during your summer break from school!?
I wanted to take Greek to obtain early college credits and to have a year of language; but above all, to acquire a greater understanding of God’s Word. I took it at this time because this is when it was offered, and my schedule was full last year to the point where I had to take home-school courses after school and still did not have time for a language.

4. Tell two ways Greek has impacted you already in studying the Bible.
Greek has impacted me already in studying the Bible in that it has made me very appreciative of all the scholars and translators who had such a passion for God, so much that they meticulously by hand translated the Bible it into our native tongue so that God’s Word could be spread to all nations.
Also, even with the small vocabulary I have acquired over the first semester and into the second, I have seen different Biblical texts come to life and become full of meaning.

5. How do you think Greek will help you at this age instead of taking it later in College or Seminary like most students do?
Studies have shown that memory is stronger the younger you are, till it peaks at about 5th grade… so the younger the better! Also, it will help me so I don’t have to take it later when I am busier.

6. Is it hard to be your age and take Greek at the Seminary level with other 20, 30, 40, and 50-year-old men?
No… they are often a help to me in my studies and I have developed great friendships with many of them.

7. How do you see taking Greek now in life helping you 10 years down the road in your own personal life?
I think it will help me greatly in personal devotions and perhaps for family members who have questions about how a text is translated. Also, by taking Greek it keeps doors open to the ministry if God were ever to call me to be a pastor.

8. Being a Teenager in today’s American culture, how do you see this to be profitable to our culture?
I have had numerous people at my school, both Christian and non-Christian alike, ask me what my purpose is in taking Greek. This opens a door to a witnessing opportunity.

9. Do you see yourself taking any more classes at the Seminary level in the next year or two?
Yes, possibly Greek 3 and 4.
