A classic interpretation of Revelation. Solid scholarship and simplicity are combined, making this commentary useful to laypersons, pastors, and teachers.

#2 Lamb is All the Glory: Revelation by Richard Brooks

This book of Revelation is the glorious culmination of Scripture. Everything focuses on the one who is the Lord of Glory – Jesus Christ. Richard Brooks comes afresh to the message of Revelation with a warm, pastoral exposition that feeds the heart as well as the mind of the reader. As with all the Welwyn Commentaries, this volume is practical, clearly written and easy to understand. Above all, it points us to the glorious victory that awaits all those who faithfully follow the Lamb of God.

#3 A Commentary on Revelation by James Durham

#4 Armageddon : Studies in the Revelation of St. John by Elliott Douglass

#5 Behold He Cometh by Herman Hoeksema

The fifty-three chapters in this work represent what Hoeksema actually preached in a series of sermons that one of his parishioners reported were “characterized by lucid, simple, and yet thorough exposition and…delivered with a warmth and fervor which kept a large congregation at spellbound attention Sunday after Sunday.”

The genius of this work is the way it explains this highly symbolic book of the New Testament. The author had the intellect to grapple with difficult passages and the ability to communicate so that the ordinary person could comprehend his message. Using sound principles of hermeneutics, Rev. Hoeksema showed whether key passages in Revelation should be take literally or figuratively, which is where so many other commentators have failed.

Hoeksema stressed that the last days will bring the ultimate glory to God. As for the book of Revelation, the author amply proved how it is meants to bring comfort to the church.

#6 Triumph of the Lamb: A Commentary on Revelation by Dennis Johnson

The book of Revelation is an unveiling, a vivid disclosure of invisible realities. Yet its bizarre imagery often leaves us puzzled. Dennis E. Johnson deftly guides us through questions about how to interpret Revelation, what it meant to its original audience, and how it equips us today. He explains that Revelation fortifies the church against the Enemy’s wiles by disclosing the profound paradoxes of Christ’s victory and glory. The central themes of Revelation converge with Christ’s triumph over the Enemy. “. . . takes some of the best material on the interpretation of apocalyptic generally, and Revelation in particular, and presents it in a palatable, readable form. Johnson knows how to write, and his text is infused with a rare sanity.” D. A. Carson

#7 Revelation: An Exposition of the First 11 Chapters by John Ramsey

An incomplete commentary by an ‘unknown’ author on a book which has already had so many expositors may seem a surprising adition to the Geneva Series. As publishers our prejudice against an imcomplete commentary was overcome by the sheer worth of these pages.

#8 The Returning King: A Guide to the Book of Revelation by Vern Poythress

Noted New Testament scholar Poythress provides an understandable and practical look into Revelation in this insightful commentary. Poythress focuses on Revelation’s core message and ensures that its details do not cloud the big picture. He shows Revelation to be a “picture book, not a puzzle book,” relevant and applicable to the daily lives of Christians.

Jenkyn’s Exposition upon the Epistle of Jude remains unsurpassed today. It powerfully exhibits Jenkyn’s piety and learning. Spurgeon says of it: “Earnest and popular, but very full, and profoundly learned. So greatly was it accepted that for some time Thomas Manton regarded his own publication on Jude as unnecessary.

The Apostle John’s first epistle has brought conviction, understanding and confidence to followers of Christ for the past 20 centuries. This dynamic book of the Bible covers the practical issues that affect our everyday lives–salvation, a godly defense against loving the world, prayer, discerning false spirits, and so much more.

Christians seeking both an in-depth study of this important epistle and a careful application of the Scriptures will be drawn to this complete work. Noted Bible expositor Martyn Lloyd-Jones eloquently discusses 1 John a chapter at a time and gives the straight truth about salvation, freedom from sin and developing a deeper relationship with God. It is a strategic work for all who are seeking to live out their beliefs and faithfully follow their Savior.

#2 1 John by Robert Candlish

Candlish’s exposition of 1 John was the ripe fruit of years of careful and loving study of the great themes in Johannine teaching. His aim was not so much to produce a detailed technical commentary after the fashion of much exegesis in the new German tradition, but to set on display the heights and depths of the theology of John’s letter: ‘it can be studied aright exegetically, only when it is studied theologically.’

#3 Exposition of Frist John by John Cotton

This commentary is not only doctrinally sound, but it is especially easy to read and understand, adding grace and knowledge to the reader.

On verse one, John Cotton explains that “from the beginning” is the highest of beginnings, ‘namely from the beginning of eternity – which, lacking a beginning, implies that He was before all beginnings. And because there cannot be two eternals, but one eternal, that is God; therefore, Christ also is eternal, God with the Father and Holy Ghost” In regard to propitiation,’ ‘man may be a means of reconciliation without satisfaction for the wrong done. Now Christ did make satisfaction for our sins (Heb. 3:17); and to make satisfaction. He offered a satisfactory sacrifice for our sins (1 Pet. 2:24). Since He bore the sin and punishment due to it, it is as much as if we had done it.” ‘Christ has taken it upon him to reconcile God to us, so that his wrath is turned from us and favor restored” (Col. 1:21). Awe were once friends with God in Paradise, and fell from him and his favor; Christ has come and made up the breach and reconciled us again.” 3:23: ‘Why is faith so necessary? Faith makes our persons acceptable to God; faith purifies the heart; faith furnishes the heart with graces which make our prayers amiable.

#4 Commentary on 1 John by A.W. Pink

#5 The Message of John’s Letters, The Bible Speaks Today by David Jackman and edited by John Stott

Immorality is inundating the Christian community and gradually eroding the foundations of Christian living. The truth ofGod incarnate, the atonement and the bodily resurrection of Christ are under attack – even from within the church. These are the concerns of Christians today, and they were the problems that faced the Christians of John’s day. In a society that scorned the gospel and sneered at godly living, John encouraged Christians with a message forged two words – truth and love. In this contemporary retelling of John’s message, David Jackman describes John’s first letter as an upwardly spiralingstaircase that circles and broadens out around the twinthemes of truth, and love, mind and heart, Word and Spirit. It is a message both timeless and timely for the church today.

Candlish says that this is a work “of great practicalinterest and value,” and that had it appeared at an earlier date, “he might have abstained from issuing” his own Lectures on this Epistle. We are glad to possess both works.

#7 An Exposition of the Epistle of 1 John by Samuel Pierce

This work by Samuel Pierce is not intended to be a critical exposition; rather, as Pierce characterized it, it is a “spiritual treatise” in which we “study Christ” and learn of the richness and fullness of the life which is united to Him by faith. Pierce’s work is the fruit of ninety-three sermons, originally published in two volumes after he died, and published here for the first time in one volume.

#8 The Epistles of John by James Montgomery Boice

The three letters of John found near the end of the New Testament have a tendency to be oversimplified or simply overlooked in the study of the Scriptures. However, though these letters may on the surface seem less applicable to our time because they address heresies and church management issues that seem unique to the early church, careful study reveals just how contemporary these concerns are. In this volume of James Montgomery Boice’s popular commentary series, pastors, Bible students, and laypersons will find analysis of John’s timeless messages of righteousness, truth, and love. Boice explains the meaning of the text verse by verse and subject by subject. Clear language and an approachable style make this commentary accessible and enlightening.
In this great work, Robert Leighton explores the key passages of the apostle’s inspiring letter to suffering believers in 1 Peter, and Griffith Thomas takes on Peter’s second epistle that warns against more subtle dangers from within the church – false teachers, errant doctrine and immoral behavior. This volume, like the others in the series, has been carefully adapted for contemporary readers and offers resounding wisdom that applies even today.

#2 Expository Discourses on I Peter by John Brown

#3 Trust and Obey: a Practical Commentary on First Peter by Jay Adams

This is a truly remarkable little gem adopting a brisk, word-by-word style of comment, and sparkling with fresh and challenging information. Some commentaries make the inspired writer say the same thing over and over again. They do not spot the distinctive pieces of counsel in each verse, or the deeper points. This book keeps the advice flowing brilliantly. Dr Adams places all the words of the text in bold as they appear in his comment, so that someone using the book as a commentary may spot them easily. Stimulating for message- preparers; good for group study and a perfect accompaniment for daily Bible study by readers of all ages.

#4 Sermons on 1 Peter by John Rogers

#5 Living for Christ: First and Second Peter by Michael Bentley

The people to whom Peter wrote his first epistle were already undergoing trials of all kinds and were soon to face fierce persecution for their faith at the hands of the cruel Emperor Nero. The apostle writes to encourage and strengthen them in the face of these trials and to remind them of the wonderful blessings and privileges they have in Christ.

He has a great deal to say about relationships, both to fellow Christians and to unbelievers, in the workplace and in the home, in the local church and in society at large.

In his second epistle Peter warns his readers against another danger that has threatened believers through the ages, that of false teaching. He points them to God’s Word as their one sure light amid the darkness and confusion of error and urges them to live holy lives in the light of the Lord’s return.

#6 1 & 2 Peter by Alexander Nisbet

Perhaps of all the apostles, most Christians find themselves most readily drawn to Simon Peter. Nisbet’s outstanding practical treatment is an ideal aid for preachers, teachers, group leaders and all students or readers of the Bible.

#7 An Exposition of Second Peter by Thomas Adams

Not included in Adams’ works, is his magnum opus, A Commentary on the Second Epistle General of St. Peter, an extensive commentary first published in 1633. The work is exegetically reliable and stylistically adept with much useful theological knowledge conveyed in striking phrases. Spurgeon commented that this book was the best Puritan commentary printed under James Sherman’s editorship. Adams is unsurpassed on Second Peter. Though the print is small, the content is rich and is well worth patient perusal. Here is a feast for ministers and all serious Bible students!

#8 Expository Sermons on 2 Peter by David Martyn Lloyd-Jones

This one volume commentary consists of 25 sermons preached on Second Peter. Treatment of the subject is broader and less detailed than usual. Intentionally, the author does not deal with every verse in the Epistle.

#1 James by Thomas Manton

The republication of this exposition of “James” by Thomas Manton is timely and that for three good reasons. The first is the special relevance of this Epistle in the contemporary Church situation, with the constant danger of antinomianism. The second reason is that for a thorough exposition of ‘this very practical book’ Manton’s work still stands in a category of its own. The third reason is the excellent example of expository preaching which this book provides.

#2 James by Robert Johnstone

Printed by Banner of Truth in January, 1977.

#3 The Practical Christian: The Message of James by Gordon Keddie

How does the Christian cope with the real world? How do we put our faith into action and live in anticipation of the Lord’s return? The epistle of James is a manual for practical godliness. Everything is here, including facing trials, blaming God for misfortunes, snobbery, sharp tongues, faith and works, squabbling in churches, worldliness and the use of money.

In this searching and straightforward commentary, Gordon Keddie confronts the reader with a challenge – to apply James’ message to our hearts and put it into practice in our lives.

#4 Truth for Life by John Blanchard

No part of the Bible is more dynamically relevant to today’s ethical culture and spiritual climate than the Letter of James. It tackles twenty-first century issues head-on, ruthlessly exposing our pressures and problems and showing how they can be overcome by the indwelling grace of God.

#5 Justification By Works & The Way of Wisdom by R.T. Kendall (2-Volumes)

Faith without works is dead. To be alive in Christ, we need to live for Christ in all aspects of our lives. The Epistle of James shows we need a faith that is at work in real situations; and this faith flows from a lifestyle guided by God’s wisdom. In the second of a two-volume commentary, eminent theologian and biblical scholar R. T. Kendall examines James 4-5, and considers what it means to have a practical faith in today’s world. Combining biblical exegesis with Kendall’s own personal thoughts and insights, this book encourages us to live for Christ anew, and to walk in the way of wisdom.

John Owen here analyzes the text of Hebrews with care and provides a judicious interpretation which shows an impressive familiarity with a wide range of biblical scholarship. He also provides rich practical applications.

#2 A Commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews by Philip Hughes

Following an introduction which includes an outline and synopsis of Hebrews as well as discussion of theme, origin, authorship, and date, Hughes makes a detailed verse-by-verse study of the text. Technical points are dealt with in notes and excursuses, making the work accessible to the specialist and nonspecialist reader alike.

#3 An Exposition of Hebrews by A. W. Pink

One of the most complete and thorough expositions of Hebrews available. Arthur Pink unfolds the rich teachings of the Epistle of Hebrews passage by passage and verse by verse. Along the way, he offers insights on how to apply these eternal truths to our lives today. An Exposition of Hebrews is an essential resource for pastors, teachers, and Bible students looking to understanding the truths found in Hebrews. This volume makes the Scriptures shine with clearer light and is a helpful guide for mining the inexhaustible wealth of God’s Word.

#4 Hebrews by John Brown

An economically priced series of commentaries selected from the best expository works written from the Reformation period to the present day.

#5 The Teaching of the Epistle to the Hebrews by Geerhardus Vos

#6 Hebrews: An Anchor for the Soul (2-volumes) by Kent Hughes

To modern Christians, the book of Hebrews can seem complicated and entirely foreign. This easy-to-understand, practical commentary clears away much of the confusion! Writing for pastors, students, and laypeople, Hughes enables you to both understand and apply the distinctive message of Hebrews. ”This is no dry and ponderous commentary, but a unique window into the feelings, the textures, the teachings, the times, the very hearts of the New Testament writers,” says Fank Peretti. 256 pages, hardcover from Crossway.

#7 A Commentary on Hebrews (2-volumes) by William Gouge

The exegetical value of this commentary is enormous: every vital word in Hebrews is explained in a manner far superior to that which suffices for modern word studies. The expository value of the commentary is equally rich: every doctrine, theme and argument which is found in the Epistle being given its own heading and section.

Hebrews captures the challenges and pitfalls of people throughout the ages, and shows why and how to press on in the faith. Its messages of warning and hope center on the surpassing supremacy of Jesus, seen often from the vantage point of the Old Testament. In keeping with the Reformed Expository Commentary series, Richard D. Phillips’ treatment of Hebrews is accessible to both pastors and lay teachers.

#1 Colossians and Philemon: The Supremacy of Christ, by Kent Hughes

The Preaching the Word Series is a set of commentaries on the New Testament written by R. Kent Hughes of College Church, Wheaton Illinois. Each book is designed to help the preacher better understand and communicate the scriptures. This work on Colossians and Philemon has no introductory notes but jumps right into a running commentary, drawing out the meat of the message found in these epistles. Great reading for pastors and lay people.

#2 Commentary upon Philemon, by William Attersoll

C. H. Spurgeon said, “A long comment upon a short epistle. The pious author labors to keep to his text, and succeeds in bringing out of it a mass of quaint practical teaching.”

#3 Exposition Upon Philemon, by Daniel Dyke

C. H. Spurgeon said, “Dyke’s remarks are memorably practical and full of common sense. He abounds in proverbs. The work is not very valuable as an exposition of the words, but excels in making use of them.”

From the preface by the author. This expositiry volume on the Pastoral Epistles had its origin in a departmet of labour connected with my official duties. Till lately, it ws for many years my lot to conduct a class of Pastoral Theology for advanced students preparing for the work of the Christian ministry; and a portion of the time during each session was usually devoted to the exposition and illustration of more or less of those Epistles. Practically, it was found impossible to overtake more, in any particular session that a comparatively limited portion of them. But as comments on the whole had been prepared, I have thought that the publication of them might be of some advantage to students of Sacred Scripture, especially those who are either in the position of candidates for the ministry, or without lengthened experiences in the discharge of its duties.

#2 Sermons on 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus, by John Calvin

John Calvin still speaks through timeless works such as this one, where he explores the aging Paul’s pastoral counsel to two younger apostles on church and doctrinal issues. Abridged and adapted for today’s reader.

#3 The Message of 1 Timothy & Titus: The Bible Speaks Today Series, by John Stott

For the postmodern world the very notion of objective truth is open to question if not ridicule. In a cultural climate of soft footings and cracking walls, Paul’s unambigous commitment to the church as “the pillar and foundation of the truth” is a timely metaphor. It calls us to reconsider the architecture of a truly Christian worldview and to reexamine the gospel and tradition we have inherited. Paul’s burden in these letters to Timothy and Titus is inheritance, the faithful guarding and delivering of the inheritance of gospel truth. Nearing the end of his life, Paul is intent on securing the heritage of gospel truth for the next generation.

#4 2 Timothy: MacArthur New Testament Commentary, by John MacArthur

In the face of spiritual warfare and the daily bombardment of worldly evils, you need a message of encouragement to “fight the good fight.” The ammunition? MacArthur’s motivating commentary on doctrinal truths and church life armed with a bibliography and subject, Scripture, and Greek word indexes. About 224 pages, hardcover from Moody.

#5 A commentary upon the Epistle of St. Paul written to Titus, by Thomas Taylor

C. H. Spurgeon said, “The title-page calls Thomas Taylor ‘a famous and mast elaborate divine.’ He was a preacher at Paul’s Cross during the reigns of Elizabeth and James I, and a voluminous writer. This Commentary will well repay the reader.”

#1 The First and Second Epistles to the Thessalonians, New International Commentary on the New Testament, by Leon Morris

The two letters of the Thessalonians dwell richly upon the Christian hope and emphasize the meaning and earnestness of the Christian’s calling in the present world. Leon Morris offers a scholarly exegetical discussion of specific problems relating to the composition of the letters themselves with an acute awareness of the relevance of Paul’s message to the practical problems encountered in living the Christian life. This is a fully .revised edition of Morris’s classic 1959 work on 1 and 2 Thessalonians and not only takes account of recent exegetical works in Thessalonian studies but also incorporates significant new knowledge in the area of early Christian sociology.

#2 1 & 2 Thessalonians, by Richard Mayhue

The Thessalonian epistles give us relevant glimpses of the church’s earliest times. When looking at the early church many contemporary questions arise and those questions are questions that exercises our modern church just as much as the historic Thessalonian one. These timeless letters provide up-to-date answers from a consecrated church, sheparded by godly men devoted to God and to his word.

#3 1 & 2 Thessalonians, Living in the End Times, by John Stott

In Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians, even though Paul is sending corrections and instructions like in other letters, he also loves them, is anxiously concerned for their welfare, begs them to stand firm, teaches them, and prays for them constantly like the pastor he is. They also contain some of the most important New Testament passages about eschatology, the culmination of all things.

For nearly seven years Nicholas Byfield (1579–1622) preached every week from Colossians. This massive commentary is based on those 300-plus sermons. It was first published in London in 1615 and reprinted in 1617, 1627, 1628, and 1649. In 1869, the book was included in Nichol’s series of standard divines. Byfield’s contemporaries considered the work a clear and faithful exposition of Paul’s epistle.

John Davenant (ca. 1576-1641) was a professor at Cambridge, a delegate to the Synod of Dort, and bishop of Salisbury. While his commentary was written over 375 years ago, it is still considered one of the best ever written on Colossians. This edition is a reprint of the 2 volume 1831 English translation, now bound in one.
